Newly graduated electrical engineers, or the aspiring ones, should know about the essential tools that they should have in their ‘arsenal’ before they start any engineering project. The lack of these essentials tools can be a hindrance in the completion of the projects while raising the overall cost.

The most common process that you will be going through over and over in a lot of projects is soldering; the joining of two metals using another metal. You will require a soldering iron/gun, solder and solder sucker.

Soldering Iron/Gun

The soldering iron and soldering gun basically perform the same function, the latter being more powerful and accurate. You should inspect your needs before you decide one or the other. Whichever one you decide to use, you will be using it to melt the filler to assemble different circuits and wiring. You can use the soldering iron/gun to build, repair or install many different types of electrical components and it is a must-have for any electrical engineer.


It is usually made of a metal that has a very low melting temperature; lead or silver are commonly used. This metal is melted with the help of a soldering iron/gun to complete a connection or connect two other pieces of metal.

Solder Sucker

When you begin your project, you will soon learn that you will need to disconnect or break connections just as many times as you will have to complete them. This will require you to have a solder sucker in your utility belt. The solder sucker is used in-tandem with a soldering iron or gun. The iron will melt the connecting metal away and the solder sucker can be used to suck the excess metal away so that you can have a clean working area. The aforementioned process is also called de-soldering.

 Cutting Tools

You will be dealing with a lot of wires in your project; they will be the basic component in all your devices. So naturally, you will require the right tools to deal with them. The two of the most important tools for dealing with wires are wire cutters and wire strippers.

The wire cutters are used to cute wires accurately without damaging the wires. If you use improvised tools for cutting wires, you will leave them unusable. So, do make sure that you have right sized and shaped cutter for the job you are taking on.

Almost all electrical wires are covered with some form of insulation; you will need the help of wire strippers to strip that insulation and expose the required length of the wires.

Measurement Tools

Find some good measuring devices before you begin work on your engineering project. A couple of good ones to have are Multi Meter and an Oscilloscope.

Multi Meter

Multi Meter is one of those multi-purpose devices that should be on your person at all times;at least whenever you are working on engineering project of any kind. It is a portable device that can be used to measure current and voltage, among other things. A Multi Meter will help you diagnose a multitude of problems in different kind of devices, whether you are creating one or repairing one.


Oscilloscopes can help you measure the fluctuations of electronic signals in electrical device. Get a digital one or an analogue one, whichever suits your requirements.
